St Marygate has been the home of Ripon’s House of Correction since 1686. The institution occupied several sites along St Marygate, including this site at 27 Marygate, and the Prison Museum at 1 St Marygate.

The plaque reads

“Erected in 1686 as a House of Correction, this building and its later Cell Block served as Ripon Liberty Prison (1815-78) and Ripon Police Station (1887-1956). It has since been a private residence.”
