A 15' tall granite monument contains a stepped base, small polished granite dado, a shaft containing a bronze plaque, and spherical finial. The polished area near the top contains a band of stars and a band of stripes. The plaque contains a relief sculpture of an eagle with its wings spread surrounded by two cannon, crossed flags, and crossed swords. The monument was carved by John Roch and John West. The fabricator was the Smith Granite Company. It was dedicated on September 10, 1890.

The south facing polished dado has the following dedication:

ERECTED
IN HONOR OF OUR
LOYAL SOLDIERS
AND SAILORS

Above the dedication, at base of shaft are the dates:

1861-1865
