Striking memorial to those from Utica and Oneida County who served the Union in the Civil War.

Large memorial located in Oneida Square near the center of downtown Utica. It is at the intersection of State, Genesee and Plant Streets.

The monument is inscribed simply:

We Keep In Memory
The Men Of Utica
Who Risked Their Lives
To Save The Union

The dates 1861 and 1865 are raised on opposite sides of the base.

The uppermost ring features the phrase, "One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, one nation, evermore." which is a quote from Ship of State, by Oliver Wendell Holmes.

The monument features three bronze statues one on the top representing Liberty and two on the lower level; one a Union Soldier, the other representing Peace.

Of note is that Liberty is pointing south towards the battlefields of the War.

The north facing has the inscription:

From Sumter by land and sea to Appomattox.

Indicating the beginning and end of the Civil War.
