In Saranac Lake is the Robert Louis Stevenson Cottage, which is a museum dedicated to the author of such publications as 'Treasure Island' and 'Kidnapped.'
The cottage is located on Stevenson Lane, off New York Route 3. From Route 3, take Pine Street a short distance to Stevenson Lane, then turn onto this road and travel to the cottage on the right.
The cottage is a white clapboard building with a wrap-around porch. There is a sign for the museum. The entrance is on the south side of the cottage. We entered and found ourselves in a small room where someone was there to greet us. The room had all walls covered with things about the author. We went through the other rooms and found the walls similarly covered in statements about the author. There were some artifacts, as well. There is the bed where he spent much of his time here. There is his smoking jacket - he constantly smoked, which likely aggravated his condition.
Stevenson came up to Saranac Lake from New York thinking that he had contracted tuberculosis, a very serious and debilitating disease. It was thought at the time that time spent in clean air environments such as Saranac Lake cured people of the disease. Stevenson spent time and did improve (it turns out that he probably had some hereditary condition and not tuberculosis). While here, Stevenson spent his time writing a collection of essays called, 'The Master of Ballantrae' and other works.
