A small headstone on the northwest corner of the family grave marker is inscribed:
O.F.W.
The south side has the name of his wife:
JANE ELLEN HOPE,
WIFE OF
OLIVER F. WINCHESTER,
BORN IN PORTLAND, MAINE, DEC 28, 1807.
DIED IN THIS CITY, MAR. 23, 1898.
Description:
Oliver Fisher Winchester began his business career as a shirt maker. He soon saw the potential growth of the firearms industry. In 1857, he purchased a controlling interest in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company from gunsmiths Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson. Winchester, along with Benjamin Tyler Henry and Nelson King, developed new firearm designs and, on May 22, 1866, formed the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.
After the Civil War, the westward expansion of the United Stated provide the company with a new and lucrative market for its lever-action repeating rifle. The business he formed over 100 years ago is still doing business as the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.
