Admiral comte Pierre André de Suffren de Saint Tropez, bailli de Suffren (17 July 1729 – 8 December 1788), French admiral. He was most famous for his campaign in the Indian Ocean, in which he fought a series of intense and evenly matched battles for supremacy against the established British power there, led by Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Hughes.

Work of the sculptor Montagne, the monument was inaugurated in 1866. The bronze statue of Suffren stands on a limestone base and bronze plates are sealed on 3 sides of the base: 1 bas-relief on each of the lateral faces, one inscription on the front of the base.

The plaque reads:

"The French Navy / Pierre André de Suffren of Saint-Tropez / Bailli of the Order of Malta / Lieutenant-General of the Naval Armies / Vice Admiral of France / This plaque was placed on 17 July 1929 on the occasion of the second centenary of the birth of Suffren / Gaston Doumergue being President of the Republic / M. Georges Leygues Minister of the Navy."
