The sporting club "Hamburger Turnerschaft von 1816 (HT 16)" was founded on 2. September 1816 by Gotthard Nicolai on Cordsen's Square (Cordsenschen Platz)and is thus the oldest universal sporting club in the world.
The HT 16 was created as citizens of Hamburg also built a place in Hamburg after the model of the gymnasium on the Hasenheide in Berlin, built by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. Today, the HT 16 is a general sporting association with more than 8,000 members, located in the Hamm, Horn and Billstedt districts, with the "sports and leisure center at Sievekingdamm", the "Sportpark Öjendorf" and the "HT 16 Fitness Studio" three large unified facilities.
