The land where this church sits was taken up by Major John Williams Marshall in 1853. Major Marshall built a wooden church in 1884. On his death the station passed passed to his son, John Willoughby Marshall, who built a second larger church in 1924 as a memorial to his eldest son, John Willoughby Hadfield Marshall, who was killed in France in 1917. Both this church and the original church were the work of the well known architect Frederick de Jersey Clere.
