Die in der 1. Hälfte des 13. Jahrhundert errichtete, beziehungsweise aus einer hölzernen Vorgängerkirche umgebaute Wehrkirche ist das Herzstück der Gemeinde Großbardau. Sie steht auf einer Erhöhung in der Nähe des kleinen Baches Parthe inmitten der Höfe und Wohnhäuser des Dorfes.

Die Kirche vereint in sich Anteile des romanischen, gotischen und barocken Baustils. Bis 1791 besaß sie sogar zwei Kirchtürme. Der östliche Kirchturm, der heute nur noch auf einem alten Grimmaer Stadtportrait und dem Kirchsiegel zu sehen ist, wurde bei einem Blitzeinschlag zerstört und nie wieder aufgebaut.

Nachwievor finden in der Kirche evangelische Gottesdienste statt (http://www.kirche-im-leipziger-land.de/veranstaltungen/venue/321-ev-luth-kirche-grossbardau). Das Pfarrhaus befindet sich gleich neben dem Friedhof, auf dessen Gelände die Kirche steht.

The church, built in the first half of the 13th century or converted from a wooden predecessor church, is the heart of the village Großbardau. The church stands on an elevation near the small stream Parthe amidst the courtyards and houses of the village.

The church combines in itself proportions of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture. Until 1791, it even had two church towers. The eastern church tower, which can only be seen today on an old Grimma town portrait and the church seal, was destroyed in a lightning strike and never rebuilt.

Protestant worship services take place in the church (http://www.kirche-im-leipziger-land.de/veranstaltungen/venue/321-ev-luth-kirche-grossbardau). The rectory is located next to the cemetery where the church is located.
