The central omnibus station is located in Poppenbüttel, a district of Hamburg.
In Poppenbüttel, the central bus station (ZOB) was strengthened in its function as a transit facility and has retained a new and clear form. The joint design by Blunck + Morgen Architekten and WTM Architekten (both Hamburg) was awarded 2009 by the Hamburg architects and engineering association.
The facility, which was opened in 1973, has a completely new appearance. The roof stands on steel supports and has an area of over 1,800 square meters. It consists of two parts: a closed wing roof and a foil construction. The latter is weather- and aging-resistant, UV-stable and self-cleaning. The wing roof consists of a steel structure with a lower aluminum lining. The entire complex is barrier-free.
The new facility became necessary because the passenger volume at the ZOB Poppenbüttel tripled from 20,000 passenger journeys a day today to around 60,000 passenger journeys a day since then. Up to 60 buses stop here per hour.(Source:http://www.zughalt.de)
