In Wilmington, along New York Route 86, is a pair of plaques, one of them commemorating 100 years of conservation efforts in the state of New York.
The marker is located on the west side of the road, about in the center of the pull off by the Ausable River. There are some rapids at this point in the river, which are accessible from trails at this pull off.
The marker has the following text:

This tablet commemorates
the one hundredth anniversary
of new York State's
Forest Preserve
The surrounding mountains,
streams and woodlands remain
a legacy from the past.

The web site for the Department of Environmental Conservation has a short history. Basically, practices and attitudes started to change in the mid 1800s. In 1880, "game protectors" were hired, later called "conservation officers" actually predated the New York State Police by 17 years. In 1885, the New York State Legislature established the New York State Forest Preserve, which saved large tracts of land in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. This same year, the forest ranger service was added.
Next to the 100th Anniversary plaque is a 50th Anniversary plaque that has similar wording.
