The old factory has been destroyed to create a residential homes and they only kept the entrance.
Until 1985, Rue du General Renault was one of the biggest industrial companies in Tours: the Schmid establishments. Installed since 1918 in the Giraudeau district, the Schmid factories made metal containers and stretched over six hectares.
This factory employed up to 1,000 employees on the eve of the Second World War. 800 workers were working there in 1960, there were still 450 workers in 1980.
The Schmid plants finally closed their doors in Tours in 1985.
In their place today stands the neighborhood of mixed activities Giraudeau which brings together dwellings as well as companies of small and medium size. The closure of Schmid coupled with the destruction of the former gas plant led to a complete restructuring of the district from the late 1980s onwards.
Nevertheless, the Schmid establishments have not completely disappeared from the landscape of the Touraine region. At the time of their destruction, the authorities had indeed the good idea to keep as a trace and memory of this past, the gate and the entrance canopy. The curious person who passes under this canopy will also see a plaque commemorating the Schmid employees who died during the Second World War.
