As the billboard reads:

The Legend of the Qu'Appelle

Daniel Harmon, an employee of the North West Company visited this area in 1804. He recorded in his journals that the stream was named "River that Calls" by the natives who said that a spirit is constantly going up or down it; and they often hear its voice which resembles the cry of a human being.

This tale has been romantically translated to the legend of an Indian brave, young and handsome, paddling to the valley to claim his beautiful bride to be. As he neared his beloved, he heard his name called out."Qu'Appelle?" (who is calling), he answered; but his echo replied.

When he finally reached his sweetheart's village he greeted with the news of her death. Heartbroken, he learned it was she who called his name, just as she died.

Pauline Johnson dramatized the tale in here poem The Legend of Qu'Appelle Valley.

"I am the one who heard the spirit voice,
Of which the paleface settlers love to tell;
From whose strange story they have made their choice
Ofname this fair valley the "Qu'Appelle,"

Perhaps on a clear, moonlit night you may also hear the echo of the Qu'Appelle."
