DE: Franz von Assisi (auch Franziskus von Assisi * 1181/1182 in Assisi, Italien; † 3. Oktober 1226 in der Portiuncula-Kapelle unterhalb der Stadt) war der Begründer des Ordens der Minderen Brüder (Franziskaner). Er wird in der römisch-katholischen Kirche als Heiliger verehrt.
Der hl. Franziskus lebte nach dem Vorbild Jesu Christi (sogenannte Imitatio Christi), wie er selbst sagte, das Evangelium „sine glossa“ (das heißt, ohne Hinzufügungen oder Veränderungen). Diese Lebensweise zog gleichgesinnte Gefährten an, was zur Gründung der Minderen Brüder führte, deren Orden rasch wuchs. Franziskus war auch Mitbegründer der Klarissen. Trotz großer Widerstände während der ersten Jahre seines Wirkens wurde er von der katholischen Kirche schon zwei Jahre nach seinem Tode heiliggesprochen. Sein Gedenktag ist in der römisch-katholischen, der alt-katholischen, der anglikanischen und einigen evangelischen Kirchen am 4. Oktober, in der evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland der 3. Oktober.

EN: Francis of Assisi (also Francis of Assisi * 1181/1182 in Assisi, Italy; † 3 October 1226 in the Portiuncula Chapel below the city) was the founder of the Order of the Friars Minor (Franciscans). He is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint.
The St. Francis, as he himself said, lived the gospel "sine glossa" (that is, without additions or changes) according to the model of Jesus Christ (so-called Imitatio Christi). This way of life attracted like-minded companions, which led to the founding of the Friars Minor, whose Order grew rapidly. Francis was also co-founder of the Poor Clares. Despite great resistance during the first years of his work, he was already sanctified by the Catholic Church two years after his death. His memorial day is in the Roman Catholic, the Old Catholic, the Anglican and some Protestant churches on October 4, and in the Protestant Church in Germany the 3rd of October.
