Not known as a state that serviced Shay Locomotives, Wisconsin had just over 100 of them in the state. This locomotive is the only surviving Wisconsin Shay known in existence.

Shay locomotives were known for large pulling power with very slow speeds. They were often used in logging, mining, and quarry lines. The Goodman Lumber Co. #9 was made in 1909 for the company when two years earlier William O. Goodman bought out his partner Philetus Sawyer and changed the name of Sawyer-Goodman to the Goodman Lumber Company. The engine was made by the Lima Locomotive & Machine Company. The #9 ran with the lumber line until 1939. From then until 1948 it was used to move cars around the lumber yard. In 1955 the lumberyard was sold and the locomotive was sent to the Historyland Museum in Hayward, Wisconsin. In the 1980's Historyland went bankrupt and the engine remained stored until 1988 when the Mid-Continent Railway Museum bought the locomotive and started to refurbish. Today the locomotive is on static display as the last remaining Wisconsin Shay.
