A bronze plaque directed by the Colonial Dames in 1996 preserves the location of the President's House for the Republic of Texas, where Mirabeau B. Lamar, the 2nd president of the Republic of Texas, lived from 1839 until annexation in 1845. The home was destroyed by fire in 1847. Later the site was sold to the nuns of the Order of the Holy Cross, who established a girls school at the site in the 1880s.
Since the 1980s, this site has been occupied by the Austin Centre, now an elegant Omni Hotel and office building.
