Ernest Stafford was killed in a mining accident at Mt. Pleasant Mine on 25th May 1909, aged 37 years.

The mine has not had a disaster according to the Illawarra Coal website but singular deaths were not uncommon. He is buried along with his wife who predeceased him & their son. The mine operated from 1881 to 1933, reopened in 1934 under new ownership & name but ceased all operations in 1955.
