The sculpture is of a man with his legs out, knees up. His hands are resting on his knees. A plaque reads: "Not Afraid to Look is the god of "no fear" his adversary is the god of "fear" Placed here in the entrance of the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Not Afraid to Look is half art object (half human) and half god (immortal). An old trade pipe inspired this sculpture; ironically, the trade pipe was in the personal collection of President Andrew Jackson. The pipe depicted a small Indian man sitting on the shank of the pipe facing away from the smoker, looking straight at the bowl. The bowl of the pipe was carved as the head of a White man facing the small-seated Indian man. The pipe was titled Not Afraid to Look the Whiteman in the Face.

This museum is located in the heart of the "American Indian Art Capital of the World," Santa Fe, New Mexico. Enclosed in this space he sits and looks. He is not afraid to look at the art institutions and Indian art marketers in Santa Fe who determine what is traditional and contemporary Native American Art. This is something that I struggle with as an artist and something that I see other Native American artists work to resolve.

I began this monument with the artist, Alicia Maria Rencountre-Da Silva, my wife. She is part of its continuing genesis."
