In heraldry, supporters, sometimes referred to as attendants, are figures usually placed on either side of the shield and depicted holding it up.

The Lion is the heraldic animal of the city of Leipzig, Germany, thus it is only fitting that the Shield with the Saxony coat of arms at Leipzig's central station is held by two lions.
