The Bamberg Rose Garden was designed in the style of an antique Roman garden. Part of the design are statues of Roman deities, sculpted by Royal sculptor Ferdinand Dietz in 1761.

One of the statues depicts Mercury, the Roman patron god of commerce, eloquence, poetry, communication, Travel, trade, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves.

The planet Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun, is named after the god.
