After the orphanage in 1580 was moved to the former St. Lucie Monastery on the other side of the Kalverstraat, the regents already left in 1581 to build a monumental entrance to remind passersby of the existence of this institution.

The gate itself is, from above, decorated with a few Orphans, staroogende on a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, to whom, the orphans and Guest Houses and this Orphanage in 't especially concerns of old, to be called plagten. Also, this same symbol, even today, to a house in the Kalverstraat, rose on the corner of one who, for the same reason, the doves rose is called. And we see it over several 'inputs' s house, and even on the gewoone seal of Regents. Among the afbeeldsels of Orphans, above Poorte For 't-Boys Home, one reads thefe lines of the nearer such persons:
Wy groeijen firm, in numerous and last,
Our second Father klaagen.
Ay, do not go forth, by thefe Gate,
Or help a minor draagen. "
"Every Gate 's Orphanage, a Poortier. Boys Gate is, with the ringing of the gate clock, and open geslooten. Thus the working boys, after agt o'clock in the evening, t 'come home, the Poortier need thereof Geeven notify the Regents. Gate Irish may no children entertainment laaten than that show to have leave. "
