After the orphanage in 1580 was moved to the former St. Lucie Monastery on the other side of the Kalverstraat, the regents already left in 1581 to build a monumental entrance to remind passersby of the existence of this institution.

Square is a small square, which, before, in the middle, a copper Armbos ??gegooten has been "For the Gate 'Boys t-House, in the Kalverstraat. The two citizen living creations, to wederzyde built at the corners of this square, come, among others, to the Orphanage. And the facades of also were two orphans ZYN carved a Girl in the one, and a boy, in the other. Both of them hold a scene for zig, which are read thefe verses from the nearer Joost van Vondel
