The village Poljica is located a few kilometers from the sea and 12 km from the town of Krk. The old town with its buildings dating back to the Renaissance, is surrounded by oak forests consisting of sessile oak (Quercus petraea). The largest and oldest sessile oak is located above the bay Cavlena. The extent of their tribe is 5.4 m and the size of the tree crown is about 30 m. The tree is about 20 meters high and its age is about four hundred years.
The lowest branch, which grows parallel to the ground, about 15 meters long and its circumference near the base is greater than 3.5 meters. The scope of the branch is much larger than the girth of other trees nearby. The smaller and younger tree (you pass it on the way to the big old tree) is about 250 years old. From the older residents it is told that in the proximity of the two giant oak trees there was a much larger tree, but on the day the First World War broke out, was struck by lightning. According to the stories of the older natives under him was a dew pond that served as a watering place for animals. After the roots disappeared, the pond also disappeared.
If you take the car to Poljica, you must turn right onto a unpaved road (N45° 05.110' E14° 29.553'). After about a kilometer you pass the gate of a sheep pasture with a grid that the sheep cannot cross. After about 800 meters there is a branch (near a sign) to the left (N45° 05.976' E14° 28.693'). There you have to park your car and hike the remaining 800 meters. After a few hundred meters, the road will be smaller and turns right. First you will pass the younger tree and than you will reach the 400 year old giant oak.
