A prominent feature of the waterfront, P'quals or White Rock is the centre of important legend of the Semiahmoo First Nations. Essentially it is the founding of the Semiahmoos in this region.
Across the Strait of Georgia on Vancouver Island's Saanich Peninsula a son of the Sun God grew up and one day saw the daughter of Chief of the Cowichans bathing in the ocean's waters. He fell in love with her. But both the Sun God and the Chief of the Cowichans denied a mortal marrying a God.
In frustration the son of the Sun God rose a large boulder over his head and threw it. He said to his bride that wherever this rocks lands that would be their new home. The rock was found on a beach across the Strait of Georgia, some 60 kilometers away.
The son of the Sun God and his bride crossed the Strait and settled on the shores of Semiahmoo Bay. From this couple the Semiahmoo multiplied and lived for thousands of years.
