L'Hôpital général est Fondé en 1724 pour enrayer la mendicité et accorder l'hospitalisation aux vieillards et aux invalides. Dès 1727, Louis XV entérine la Fondation de l'établissement sous les noms de Saint Étienne et de Saint-Bernard. En 1729, de nouveaux
bâtiments nécessaires à l'agrandissement de l'hôpital, sont réalisés sur les plans de l'architecte Amiénois Le Veneur. À partir de 1780, l'Hôpital général recueille et garde les enfants abandonnés.
De 1875 à 1878, l'Hôpital général est entièrement reconstruit grâce à la générosité du docteur Georges Dumont (1807 - 1869), qui lègue en 1869 la totalité de sa fortune à l'établissement où il avait exercé la médecine pendant de longues années. Le nouvel
hôpital se déploie entre la rue où vous vous trouvez et les remparts de la ville (actuel boulevard Vauban).
Quatre longues ailes de bâtiments s'entrecoupent et se développent sur plusieurs niveaux. Au centre, une nouvelle chapelle prend place. Les espaces intérieurs situés à gauche de la cour principale sont dévolus aux patients masculins (des enfants aux "vieillards") ceux de droite aux femmes selon la même répartition par tranches d'âges. L'aile centrale est quasiment réservée à l'usage de la congrégation féminine qui dispense les soins.
En 1844, dans une carrière située entre le jardin de l'hôpital et le talus intérieur des anciens remparts, Jacques Boucher de Perthes (1788-1868) découvre un biface paléolithique dans un terrain où l'on trouve aussi une molaire d'éléphant. Il en conclut donc « que le banc de l'Hôpital est diluvien » : si des haches et des couteaux taillés par l'homme côtoient des ossements fossiles d'animaux antédiluviens, cela signifie que l'homme a été le contemporain de certains grands animaux disparus, comme le mammouth. Boucher de Perthes prouve ainsi ici l'ancienneté de l'homme sur terre et pose le fondement d'une nouvelle science : de la Préhistoire.

The General Hospital was founded in 1724 to curb begging and grant hospitalization to the aged and the disabled. In 1727, Louis XV endorsed the Foundation of the establishment under the names of St. Stephen and St. Bernard. In 1729, new Buildings necessary for the extension of the hospital, are carried out on the plans of the architect Amiénois Le Veneur. Beginning in 1780, the General Hospital collected and guarded abandoned children.
From 1875 to 1878, the General Hospital was entirely rebuilt thanks to the generosity of Dr. Georges Dumont (1807 - 1869), who in 1869 bequeathed his entire fortune to the institution where he had practiced medicine for many years. The new hospital extends between the street where you are and the ramparts of the city (now Boulevard Vauban).
Four long wings of buildings intersect and develop on several levels. In the center, a new chapel takes place. The interior spaces located to the left of the main courtyard are devoted to the male patients (from the children to the "old") those to the right to the women according to the same distribution by age groups. In 1844, in a quarry between the hospital garden and the inner embankment of the ancient ramparts, Jacques Boucher de Perthes (1788-1868) discovers a Palaeolithic biface in a field where there is also an elephant molar. He concludes that "the bench of the Hospital is diluvian": if axes and knives carved by man rub shoulders with fossil bones of antediluvian animals, it means that man has been the contemporary of certain great animals Missing, like the mammoth. Boucher de Perthes proves here the antiquity of man on earth and lays the foundation of a new science: Prehistory.
