The Freedom Column is a 20 meter (66') high obelisk is made of Italian and Polish marble and sandstone from the isle of Bornholm. It was created by sculptor Nicolai Abildgaard and erected in 1797. The corners of the obelisk have a 2.2 meter (7.26') high figures symbolizing Fidelity, Justice, Virtue, and Courage.

The Freedom Column was erected to commemorate the abolition of adscription in 1788. Adscription was the practice of binding a tenant farmer to his hereditary plot of land and to the will of his landlord. This, effectively, prevented tenant farmers from leaving the property from where they were born without the permission of the landowners. The Freedom Column was a gift to the City of Copenhagen from its citizens who advocated for the abolition of adscription. The Freedom Column also honors King Christian VII who abolished the practice and supported further agricultural reforms.

The stamp was issued by Denmark in 1938 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of abolition of adscription in 1788.
