In Keenesville, within Ausable Chasm, is this city of cairns, deep within the chasm.

Ausable Chasm is a major tourist attraction. There is an admission fee - several, in fact, depending on the package purchased. To walk on the trails around the chasm, it is about $17/ person (2016). Take a map with you. At the intersection take the yellow route - also called the Inner Sanctum Trail. This trail is well built and maintained, and there are stairs most of the way where there is change in elevation. Still, I would rate this trail as at least moderate as the Inner Sanctum Trail is some 80 ft. below the Rim Trail where you start from.

The cairns appear in a relatively wide area in the chasm. In this area, there are several levels of rock where cairns have been assembled usually less than a foot high. I estimated over 100 separate cairns (I lost count after 50, but there could be more. They are freely stacked - I did not notice any glue or mortar. If there is high water through the chasm, I would guess that these would be washed away.

I saw no signs about it. I assume that at one time they were built spontaneously or have been built a few at a time over time.
