This is an average-sized monument, decorated with the floral trim common to zinc markers. Only the main panel has lettering, and at the top, there is a symbol with which I am not familiar (contributions are welcome). It is a Star of David with several letters superimposed, maybe an alpha and omega and our own letter 'vee'? The inscription is:
Sterling
Lake
Tarpley,
Born
Apr. 7, 1854,
Died
Apr. 9, 1886.
We only know that thou
has gone,
and that the same
relentless tide
which bore thee from
us, still glides on,
and we who mourn thee
with it glide.
Below is a depiction of Jesus with two children, and the family name, "Tarpley." The second panel depicts a psychopomp and a harp, while panel three features a funeral wreath and an anchor, a symbol of hope. Finally, the fourth panel has a set of clasped hands, suggesting a good marriage, as well as a sheaf of wheat.
Mr. Tarpley's Findagrave entry (see Website) indicates that he was fatally wounded when a holster with his loaded gun fell from a wall -- hanging from a nail, perhaps -- and a bullet struck him. He died several days later.
