"Auf dem einst zusammenhängenden Areal der beiden Freiflächen Arnulfsplatz und Bismarckplatz kreuzten sich schon zur Zeit der Römer bedeutende Handels- und Heeresstraßen. Hier trafen sich die Wege nach Westen zu einem römischen Kastell an der Naabmündung, zum heutigen Augsburg und ins heutige Österreich. Im Mittelalter lag dieses Areal jenseits der Stadtmauern und diente vor allem als Lager- und Hinrichtungsstätte. Mit der Erbauung des Theatergebäudes wurde der nördliche Teil des vormals als „Jakobsplatz“ bezeichneten Gebiets vom südlichen Teil abgegrenzt und später in „Arnulfsplatz“ umbenannt. Ob es sich bei jenem „Arnulf“ um den ostfränkischen Kaiser Arnulf aus dem 1. Jahrhundert handelt, der Regensburg als seine Residenzstadt wählte, oder ob doch eher der bayerische Herzog Arnulf gemeint ist, dem Regensburg seine erste Stadterweiterung verdankt, darüber sind sich die Stadthistoriker nicht einig. Auch heute fungiert der Arnulfsplatz als Verkehrsknotenpunkt am Rande der Regensburger Altstadt. An der Ecke Arnulfsplatz-Kreuzgasse gruppiert sich um einen Innenhof der Gebäudekomplex der Gaststätte Kneitinger und des Velodroms."
