This memorial is in honour of Lieutenant Colonel Joseph W. Boyle D.S.O. also known as Klondike Joe Boyle, King of the Klondike and the Saviour of Rumania.

Boyle was well known for his exploits in the Klondike region, mining gold and becoming quite wealthy, even funding an hockey team (The Dawson City Nuggets, who would lose to Ottawa 9-2 and 23-2 for the Stanley Cup).

Boyle entered military service in WWI organizing a machine gun company. Late in 1918 he began working with the British Secret Service in Russia during the Russian Revolution. He helped get 50 Rumanian hostages out of Russia and returned the Romanian crown jewels and treasury to Romania becoming a hero to the Romanian people.

For this he was awarded the Order of the Star of Romania and Order of the Crown of Romania. In the UK he was given the Distinguished Service Order and Croix de Guerre in France. Imperial Russia also gave him several medals including the Order of Regina Maria.

Klondike Joe passed away in 1923 in Hampton Hill, England at the age of 55. In 1983 he was relocated to his hometown Woodstock.
