This memorial is in memory of Malcolm McKenzie who died at the Battle of Ridgeway on June 2nd, 1866.

The Battle of Ridgeway was a large attack by Fenians (Irish-Americans supporting Ireland's separation from the UK). The battle was an embarrassing defeat for the ill-prepared Canadian militias. Although the victory was short-lived as after another victory against a small garrison at Fort Erie, the Fenians surrendered to US Navy vessels a day later.

Malcolm was one of 9 Canadians killed in the battle. He was a University of Toronto student fighting with the Queen's Own Rifles. He was a Rifleman and only 27 years old at the time of his death.
