Nellie McClung is a celebrated Manitoban who is remembered as an author and life-long champion of human rights.
She was an active woman suffragist and was a key figure in helping Manitoba women became the first in Canada to win the right to vote on January 27, 1916.
She continued as part of the "Famous Five" to help influence the 1929 landmark decision where women in Canada were recognized as "persons" under The British North American Act.
Her quote: I want to leave something behind when I do; some small legacy of truth. some word that will shine in a dark place.
The quote is beside a realistic bronze sculpture of The Famous Five by Winnipeg artist, Helen Granger Young. Standing around the table are Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Emily Murphy, while Henrietta Muir Edwards is seated opposite McClung.
