An accident occurred when Pilatre de Rozier and Pierre-Ange Romain had just left Boulogne-sur-Mer and tried to reach England via the air. This was a major challenge financed by the French State, which Pilatre de Rozier had to carry out, having committed to it, although the motivation was not really there: Jean-Pierre Blanchard and John Jeffries Had gleaned politeness by making the first crossing from Dover to Calais in January 1785. He who wished to renounce the success of Blanchard and Jeffries would have done better to follow his instinct.

Un accident qui est intervenu alors que Pilatre de Rozier et Pierre-Ange Romain venaient de quitter Boulogne-sur-Mer pour tenter de rejoindre par la voie des airs l’Angleterre. Un défi de taille financé par l’Etat français, que Pilatre de Rozier se devait de mener à bien, s’y étant engagé, bien que la motivation n’y fût plus vraiment : en effet, Jean-Pierre Blanchard et John Jeffries lui avaient grillé la politesse, en réussissant la première traversée de Douvres à Calais, en janvier 1785. Lui qui voulait renoncer suite au succès de Blanchard et Jeffries aurait mieux fait de suivre son instinct.
