The Northampton Brewery was the first brewpub to be open in New England outside of Boston. 1986, brother and sister Janet and Peter Egelston opened the Northampton Brewery. Since then they opened their second brewpub, the Portsmouth Brewery in Portsmouth, NH and in 1994 they opened a microbrewery, also in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Smuttynose Brewing Company. In December 2000, Janet and Peter Egelston bought each other out of their respective shares of the Northampton and Portsmouth Breweries and Janet is now the sole owner and operator of the Northampton Brewery.
The Northampton Brewery became very popular with the people of the area and in April 2004 they opened an outdoor area. It is used for regular seating and is also available for large party reservations. The Northampton Brewery is consistently voted the Pioneer Valley’s best brewpub in the Valley Advocate Springfield Advocate Readers’ Polls.
