The Second Congregational Society of Northampton was organized in 1825 by forty-three Northampton residents. The Free Congregational Society of Florence (a village within Northampton) was organized in 1863. In 1944, both congregations united to form the Unitarian Church of Northampton and Florence. In 1972, the name was changed to the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence.

The Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence meets in the brick Classical Revival styled building that was designed by architect Guy Kirkham and built in 1904. The building features six Roman style Ionic columns supporting an entablature beneath an ornamented pediment. The pediment contains a half-moon window in its tympanum. The building rests on a granite foundation. A series of granite steps leads up the the main entrance.

In the Spring of 2009 the Reverend Janet C. Bush was installed as the Society's minister. She has served ever since. The Society has over 300 members and friends and meets for Sunday services at 10 am.
