This grave is in the Riverside Cemetery in Kirkwood. It is one of the oldest if not the oldest stone here.

"“Thomas, Joseph: b. 5-2-1761 & d. 4-24-1831. Wife Phebe Tyler b. 5-2-1761 & d. 4-23-1831 (question dates on Phebe). Settled in Conklin in 1817; enl . as a pvt. in the Mass. Line of Artificers under Col. Baldwin. (Lawyer pp 28 gives the name as John Thomas; settled in Conklin; pvt. In Mass. Troops.) Joseph Thomas of Damascus, Penn.; settled in Great Bend, 1817; in Great Bend near the N.Y.-Penn. Border. His farm adjoined that of his soldier friend John Conklin. In June 1st, 1785, he married Phebe Tyler of Cohacken, N.Y. She was a daughter of Capt. Benzaliel Tyler who was killed in the battle of Minisink, Orange County, July 22, 1779. He was born in Millanerville, Wayne County and died in Great Bend. He served from 1778 to 1781; he enl. in Capt. Jacob R. DeWitt’s Company of Rangers. In 1778 he enl. in Capt. Peters Company of Col. Jedathan Baldwin’s Regt of artillery Artificers of the Continental Army then stationed at Newburg. Later he accompanied part of the Regt to Yorktown, Va., and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. About this time his term of enlistment expired. He is buried in the cemetery at Riverside near Conklin, N.Y. Has an SAR marker. Inscription on the gravestone, “Joseph Thomas, died Apr. 23, 1831, aged 70 Years Soldier of the Revolution”.”"
