In Ticonderoga, on top of Mt. Defiance, is a picnic pavilion, which has an orientation sign of the view east to the Green Mountain Range.

Mount Defiance is a hill west of Lake Champlain and about a mile south of the center of the village of Ticonderoga. From the center, go on 'The Portage' to Mt. Defiance Road on the left. Go on this road and drive to the end to the gate and access road on the right. You either pay a fee at the gate, or, if you went to Fort Ticonderoga, when you pay an admission fee you get a token that is used to open the gate.

At the top of Mt Defiance is a picnic pavilion where the sign is located. The pavilion has open views all around. The sign has the following text:

"A Panoramic View of History!

Mount Defiance, at 853 feet above sea level, rises 758 feet over Lake Champlain. It overlooks the lake and the outlet of the La Chute River, which flows out of Lake George to the west and wraps around the north side of the mountain before emptying into Lake Champlain between here and Fort Ticonderoga. Lake Champlain separates New York and Vermont. Fort Ticonderoga is visible to your left on the New York shore. Directly across the lake on the Vermont shore is Mount Independence. On that wooded peninsula the American Army constructed an extensive network of fortifications during the American Revolution. In 1776-1777, a floating bridge connected Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence across the narrow chokepoint. The jagged peaks of Vermont's Green Mountains are visible about 20 miles to the east.

The upper photo is a picture of the scene with four letters marked on it. The legend is below, identifying:
A. Fort Ticonderoga
B. Lake Champlain
C. Mount Independence
D. Vermont and the Green Mountains

Below is another picture, of Mount Defiance, the hill that you are on when you see the sign.
