The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

This bridge is also known as Church Kirk Bridge and is a Historic England Grade II Listed Building with the following text. "Canal bridge on Leeds-Liverpool Canal, c.1810. Coursed sandstone blocks. Elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs, bands, parapets with ridged copings (renewed on south side). At end on south side are sloped retaining walls (curved on east side) of steps to tow path, which changes sides here. On both sides the arch is now crossed by a pipe which pierces the abutments." link
