The 40 acre Northern Engraving Corporation site had issues with wastewater treatment and disposal practices which led to soil, groundwater and surface water contamination.

Northern Engraving has been in business for over 105 years and has one of its main manufacturing plants in Sparta, WI. The plant fabricates metal name plates, dials and decorative trim for the automobile industry. The processes which they use include anodizing and chromate conversion-coating. Poor practices in their wastewater procedures led to contamination. A Superfund clean up proceeded and in 1997 This site was removed from the NPL. The plant is still one of the largest employers in the Sparta area today.
