In May 2000 an E. Coli outbreak affected around 2500 people of Walkerton, ON after the groundwater became contaminated by farm runoff. Although the Walkerton Public Utilities Commission had tests with evidence of the contamination they continued to assure people the water was safe to drink. As a result of not admitting to the contamination, 5 people died.
Seven people total died from the tragedy. Stan and Frank Koebel, utility manager and water foreman respectively, were arrested and plead guilty to common nuisance after admitting to falsifying reports and drinking on the job. As a result of their plea bargain Stan served 1 year in jail and Frank served 9 months house arrest.
