This building is only one of two buildings in the district representative of stone construction. All the stone used to build this massive building was quarried locally. The building itself was the brain child of local lumber baron Alexander McMillan. He built the building on top of a city park that featured an artesian well. The building took two years to complete and was started in 1885. That same year State Bank built a building in La Crosse at 311 Main Street to handle their growing customer base. This building soon became too small and in 1913, State Bank purchased the McMillan Building and have remained in this building still today.
