This blue plaque is on the side of an old warehouse on a Wharf of the River Aire in Leeds that once belonged to William Turton.

The plaque is next to an arch way in the building that would have been used by horses to load or unload goods on the wharf. It has a horse's head above the arch.

Corn and hay merchant here at Turton's Wharf
and Warehouse rebuilt 1876. He pioneered
horse drawn tramways across northern England.
From 1866 he ran omnibuses in Leeds,
becoming a founding director, then chairman,
of Leeds Tramways Company 1872-1895.
Councillor and Poor Law Guardian.
