Brice Martin was born in 1844 in Tennessee. Though being born in the south, he remained loyal to the union during the US Civil War. He was not yet 18 when he was killed. The inscription on his headstone says:
BRICE MARTIN
Born in 1844
Killed by members of the Pro-Southern Missouri State Guard
Jan. 1862
In Missouri, the Confederates were called State Guard, whilst Unionists were called Home Guard. However, in a very few old documents and letters home, some Confederates called themselves Home Guard and some Unionists called themselves State Guard, causing some confusion. In this case, the inscription makes it clear that the killer of Brice Martin were Pro-Southern State Guard.
