The American Civil War was in its infancy when Clothilde was born. States were seceding from the Union. The pony Express was disbanded. By the end of the 1860's the Transcontinental Railroad and the Suez Canal were completed allowed people to move in an unprecedented fashion. The completion of a transoceanic telegraph line made communication simpler. Commercial electricity generation allowed households access to power for lamps starting in the 1880's when Clothilde was a young woman. She may have seen early movies on the Kinetoscope, an early motion picture exhibition device invented by Thomas Edison. If she had broken a leg her doctor may have taken advantage of the new x-ray machines to make the diagnosis. Starting in the 1900'sshe may have ridden in a mass produced automobile. In the 1920's she would have experienced Prohibition and may have delighted grandchilder with the Winnie the Pooh books. After weathering the Great Depression she may have thrilled to hear the story of how Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki crossed the Pacific Ocean In the 1940's. Perhaps she was hoping to live long enough the see the new musical "West Side Story". Unfortunately she died just 10 days before it was released.
