This monument is along Urbana Pike, a busy highway. Instead of pulling off on the shoulder, consider walking from the nearby office park, or crossing the street from the Monocacy National Battlefield visitors center (a bit of a walk). This monument claims a "Confederate Victory" and honors the "Southern Soldiers" who died here on July 9, 1864, 50 years to the day before the monument was dedicated.
50 years later, an adjacent monument was erected by the State of Maryland which honored troops from both sides, as well as noting the battle's role in delaying Confederate advances, and thereby allowing Union troops to reinforce Washington
