One hundred years to the day after the Battle of Monocacy (1864), the Maryland Civil War Centennial Commission erected this monument to soldiers who fought and died on both sides of the conflict. While noting the Confederate victory, the monument also notes the role that the battle played in delaying Jubal Early's forces from reaching Washington. This delay earned the Battle of Monocacy the nickname "The Battle that Saved Washington."
This memorial is adjacent to a 1914 memorial to "Southern Soliders" placed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
