The Christiansburg Industrial Institute was founded in 1866 by Captain Charles Schaeffer, who was a member of the Freedmen's Bureau. The institute served to educated freed slaves following the Civil War. The building was completed in 1875 and stands next to the Schaefer Memorial Baptist Church which was also founded by Captain Schaeffer who was an ordained Baptist Minister. Booker T. Washington served as an adviser to the institute in 1896. The Christiansburg Industrial Institute served the educational needs of African American's until it closed in 1966. In the years since it closed the building has been used as a community center.
