Unlike most Chinatowns, Montréal’s has four separate gates (or paifang in Mandarin). Two larger ones form the NW and SE entrances on boul. Saint-Laurent and two smaller ones are toward the NE and SW on Rue de La Gauchetière (which is a pedestrian walkway in this area). The one shown on the stamp is the northernmost on boul. Saint-Laurent. Also, the stamp shows the gate as one is leaving Chinatown, not entering. Traditional stone lions can also be found guarding the gates.
The stamp was one of eight issued in May of 2013 commemorating Asian Heritage Month in Canada. They show various Chinatown gates located in cities throughout Canada.
