The wayside shrines in Europe has appeared in the Gothic period, reached the peak of its expansion in the Baroque. At that time, begin to appear brick wayside shrine of pillar type, which in the 19th century almost replaced the older columnar type. Both forms represent the column on which Jesus Christ was chained and flogged before his crucifixion. Therefore are sometimes decorated with symbols of Christ's suffering (reprimand, spears, spikes, etc.). It was erected as a thanks for saving in diseases and misfortunes.
