Shine On is appropriately located shining light on the history of the early railroads of the area. The utility box Shine On is well done.

With the arrival of the Northern Pacific, the Union Pacific, Great Northern, and Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific railroads, Spokane became one of the most important rail centers in the western United States, being the site of four transcontinental railroads.

The train depot is still standing and is a Spokane landmark since 1891. It now serves Greyhound and Amtrak commuters.

Shine On is one of 13 decorated utility boxes of phase one. By this time phase two should be on its way.

"Railroad lanterns are an iconic symbol of an era when trains provided the fastest, most sophisticated method of coast-to-coast transportation. To modern eyes, a railroad lantern may seem like a primitive, basic light source, but these simple lanterns served as an important means of communication between engineers and station staff.

Due to the loud noise of the locomotive engine, railway workers needed to use a variety of methods, such as flags and semaphore signals, to communicate with the train engineer. Railroad lanterns were used as a primary source of standard communication at night, when semaphores and flags couldn't be seen.

In addition, lanterns were used to alert the engine driver when there were hazards ahead, such as broken tracks or obstructions that could cause accidents."
